The land on which One Tree Hill sits has been in the Woods family since the early 1900s. Initially cleared for dairy farming, the property evolved over the years, but the iconic solitary tree, a native sour cherry tree, remained untouched. Standing tall on the hill, this tree became a landmark for the local community and a symbol of the Woods family’s connection to the town.

As Maleny grew and developed, the Woods family recognized the beauty and significance of One Tree Hill. They decided to share this unique spot with the public, allowing visitors to experience the area’s breathtaking views and tranquility. The hill quickly became a popular spot for weddings, family gatherings, and photography sessions, with the stunning backdrop of the Glass House Mountains making it an ideal location for capturing special moments.

Despite its popularity, One Tree Hill remained private property, and the Woods family maintained strict guidelines to preserve its natural beauty. Visitors are encouraged to respect the land and ensure that their presence does not disturb the local wildlife, cattle or the environment. 

The Woods family donated the funds raised, over $40,000, (from donations by people using One Tree Hill ) to local charities and community organizations. Specifically, the donations were often directed to the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital and other local causes that support the Maleny community. The family’s generosity in donating these funds highlights their deep connection to the local area and their commitment to giving back to the community, which has been an integral part of their lives for generations.

In addition to its natural beauty, One Tree Hill also offers visitors a glimpse into the history of Maleny. The hill is a reminder of the area’s agricultural past, with the surrounding lands once filled with dairy farms and small holdings. Today, while Maleny has grown and modernized, One Tree Hill serves as a link to the past, a place where the beauty of nature and the spirit of the community come together.

Unfortunately, in February 2023, the Woods family made the difficult decision to close One Tree Hill to the public due to complaints made to the council. Florence Woods is quoted saying, “This is not a decision the family made lightly,” but with pressure from the council, it was the only solution. While One Tree Hill is no longer accessible to visitors, its legacy continues to resonate within the community, reminding everyone of the importance of stewardship and the delicate balance between sharing and preserving our natural treasures.
